Oral Health Check

During your first visit to 41 South Bar, you will have a consultation with Dr. Tom Donnelly to discuss how you want to improve your dental health and smile. During this visit, he will use an intra-oral camera to guide you through your mouth, so that you can any noticeable problems can be identified (if any) and chat about how to solve them.

As always, your treatment begins with the oral health check. This reviews the health of your mouth, the gums and teeth to ensure there are no underlying problems. It is our aim to work with you to help you achieve the smile you want in the most practical and cost-effective way for you.

Dental Hygiene Treatments

Improve your oral health with a dazzling professional clean that will prevent dental diseases, keep your breath fresh and polish your overall appearance.

Looking after your gums is the only way to look after your teeth. Anjuli, our dental hygienist will remove any plaque or tartar to keep your gums and mouth healthy and bring back that ‘like new’ feeling. She will also advise you on the correct brushing techniques and how to clean between your teeth, helping to maintain your smile by removing any stains.

It is essential to remember that however beautiful your smile if your gums are not healthy and your teeth become loose, it is all to no avail. We recommend visiting the hygienist regularly to keep your gums and teeth at their very best.

One 30 minute appointment at your private dentists in Banbury can make this much of a difference:

tooth fillings banbury

Fillings

Fillings are a common dental procedure, and at 41 South Bar in Banbury, we only use composite (white) fillings as an alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings that are not so pleasing to the eye.

White fillings are strong, durable and look much more pleasing to the eye will last a long time if they are looked after.

If the filling is large Dr. Tom Donnelly may recommend that you have a porcelain inlay or onlay constructed. This is a fantastic way to help preserve as much of the tooth as possible.

Fillings are used to solve a range of dental issues. If you have a problem with the appearance of your teeth, a less costly way of correcting the situation may be to bond the teeth with white filling. This may take away the need for porcelain or crowns or it can be used as a (short or long term) ‘test drive’ of a new look. Many of our clients have used this technique and are extremely happy with the results.

Crown Treatments

Crowns are used to repair broken down or damaged teeth. They allow larger changes in shape and can make up for bigger defects than veneers. They can also be used on top of an implant acting as the visible tooth.

First, the tooth has to be prepared to accept a crown. An impression is taken. This is then sent to the laboratory for the crown to be created. While this is happening a temporary crown will be fitted to keep your smile intact. When the crown is returned from the technicians the temporary crown is removed and the longer term crown is fitted. Modern crowns can look absolutely fabulous. However, as with all things, there are limitations.

Crown Treatment - Same Day

We are always looking to introduce innovative procedures to make our patients more comfortable. One of the ways we have achieved this is to introduce the Cerec Machine. We understand that all our clients have busy lives, to have just the one appointment for a crown, inlay and onlay to be made and fitted is a terrific time saver for them.

Cerec is fantastic on many levels: 1. Loss of as little natural tooth as possible; 2. NO impressions, NO temporary crowns, NO second visit; 3. Minimum downtime from work.

The appointment time for one crown is 60 minutes for the preparation and design. The crown is milled and glazed in 45 minutes and is ready to be fitted. We leave 30 minutes for the fit appointment. In just over 2 hours the whole procedure is over. Some people go shopping in the 45-minute gap or read the paper in the comfortable lounge downstairs.

tooth bonding banbury

Tooth Bonding

If you have a crooked, chipped or short tooth this can be corrected by etching the enamel and placing a colour matched filling material to the area to make the tooth complete. A special light is then used to harden the material and bond it to your tooth.

This technique can be used as a short or long-term solution to problem smiles. In general none of the underlying tooth is altered as the material is added to the surfaces. This can allow alterations to be made over a period of time to get to a position of the most acceptable cosmetic solution for you. The sorts of problems bonding can correct are narrow smiles, crooked teeth, protruding teeth and worn teeth.

Bonding is a very straightforward way of getting a great result and in most circumstances, a local anaesthetic is not required. This can be used for one tooth or to allow changes to almost every tooth. The results can be ‘Wow’.

dental veneers banbury

Veneers

If you have discoloured, chipped or irregularly shaped teeth, porcelain veneers can be used to re-create a lovely natural smile. To prepare the area for veneers, the thickness of the tooth may have to be prepared. Impressions are taken and sent to a laboratory. Temporary veneers are fitted to keep your smile intact. At the second visit to our Banbury dental clinic, the temporary veneers are removed and the tooth surfaces are chemically treated. Once complete, the surface of the tooth is ready for the veneer(s) to be placed.

The benefits of veneers are that they are wafer thin but also very strong and resistant to stain. They can cover over areas of missing tooth, twisted teeth and to a degree discoloured teeth.

Bridges

Bridges are a lovely way to create a complete smile. A bridge enables gaps in your smile to be filled in. The adjacent natural teeth are used to support the false tooth/teeth required to fill the space. This means that there is no plate or anything to take out of your mouth. The steps to prepare your teeth for bridges are the same as for crowns.

There are also sticky bridges (Maryland bridges). These bridges use a small plate, which is glued to the inside of your teeth. The preparation of your natural tooth, to accept this style of bridge, is generally none or very little in more extreme circumstances. They are restricted in their use but can be a valuable tool to fill a space.

Dental implants

Implants are used as supports where you have gaps to allow crowns, bridges or dentures to be attached. Each person will have a completely individual need. So for one person, it may be one implant with a crown; someone else may use 2 implants with locator abutments to hold a full lower denture steady. If you have gaps or wear dentures these can be an option for you.

For the first time in history, once a tooth has gone something can be put in its place.

An implant, or implants, when placed into your jaw becomes, over time, a part of you. In some circumstances, this is the closest we can get to the natural tooth. On top of this solid foundation, a crown/bridge or denture can be placed. So biting apples and eating steak does not just have to be a memory.

Dental implant treatment takes time. The most important part is the initial planning. Several visits are required to assess healing and how the implant has osseointegrated (become part of the bone). Once ready, the final stages to put the tooth or teeth on is very similar to crowns and bridges on teeth.

Implants can give you back the nearest equivalent to teeth that you have lost.

tooth whitening banbury

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a very simple bleaching procedure when carried out by a dental professional. This is an ever-evolving treatment.

In our experience, most clients want a brighter smile but not too bright unlike some of the TV personalities. We are careful to discuss what result you want to see if it is feasible. For your information, if you have fillings or crowns on your teeth that show when you smile you may have to contemplate changing these. If you want to feel better about your smile, and it is just the shade that is getting you down, tooth whitening is a straightforward procedure.

How long does it take?

At your initial dental appointment in Banbury, we will discuss the treatment and what your expectations are. We will also assess your suitability for the treatment. If all is well, impressions will be taken to custom make your bleaching trays in our laboratory.

One week later you will be invited back to have them fitted. We will take you through the instructions for home use to ensure you understand how to complete the procedure. We will advise on dosage amounts, timescales, storage and any side effects. You will then take away the new teeth whitening trays and syringes of bleaching gels for use at home.

Two weeks later you are invited back so that we can assess the results together.

Jaw Joint Problems (TMD)

The more technical name for this type of problem is Temporo-Mandibular Dysfunction Syndrome (TMD) and is a peculiar problem. We all have a little of it, but for some people, it causes lots of problems. It is where the teeth, muscles of the jaw and the jaw joints are not working together properly.

The symptoms can be a pain on eating, headaches, neck aches, face aches, toothaches, tooth wear, tooth movement with gum disease, limitation on opening your mouth and even migraines. This list looks very long and complicated and does not mean that every one of these problems is TMD, but it is an area where if you do have these symptoms and we can link them to TMD then we can often treat and help reduce or, in some cases, remove the symptoms.

What does the treatment entail?

Initially, Dr Tom Donnelly will assess you to investigate your particular problems and advise if he may be able to help you.
He may make a diagnostic aid which you wear overnight which gives an indication as to whether a full treatment is justified in your particular case. If wearing this gives some relief of your symptoms he may advise you to wear a Michigan splint. This is similar in looks to a hard gum shield but, with regular adjustments, it could help to alleviate your particular problem.

Dr Tom Donnelly has had great success over many years with patients who have had many problems including migraines, broken down teeth or who have had teeth extracted but did not understand why.

It is all about understanding why you have a problem and solving the cause not just the problem of the moment.

Migraine relief

Do you suffer from headaches, neck aches, breaking down teeth or worn teeth? If so it may be dentally related.

In some cases, where the muscles of the jaw, jaw joint and teeth are not working well together (temporomandibular dysfunction syndrome) there can be over activity of the facial muscles. Due to the way that our body is made up if the jaw muscles overwork, they can put considerable strains on the bones of our skulls, make the neck and back muscles overcompensate (and so work harder), even have chemical effects on the brain by over producing lactic acid and in some cases having cramp like pains in your face.

Treatment can be carried out here and can give great results.
